Young, Dumb and Fun

It finally happened…Avril Lavigne and Simple Plan have collaborated! Avril’s new song featuring Simple Plan, “Young and Dumb,” was released May 9th, and I have some thoughts.

As a fan of both Avril and Simple Plan, this track is overall a fun, easy track to listen to. I enjoyed that Avril and Simple Plan made this song as a celebration of their past when they were chasing their dreams, and I LOVED Avril’s reference to her signature pop-punk fashion choices from back in the day as it was so iconic for women at the time. However, the song was a little too Auto-Tune heavy for my liking, because both Simple Plan and Avril sound excellent when performing live, and I found the Auto-Tune heaviness to be unnecessary. The song is also written and produced like it would be made a Top 40 radio hit, and while this is not necessarily a bad thing, for my personal taste, deeper cuts and stylistically unique pop-punk tracks tend to be my favorites.

This is a great listen if you want a light, simple,feel-good song to play in the car for everyone to enjoy, whether your friends are pop-punkers or not. While I definitely have other favorite songs from both Avril and Simple Plan, I like this song overall and I am SO glad fans of both artists got the long-awaited collaboration they had been wishing for.
